Learn How to Set Up a Proxy Server

The goal of this site is for you to be able to set up a proxy server of your own (my 10 minute proxy tutorial is linked on pretty much every page). It’s an elite proxy server tutorial (PDF format) which includes very simple, step by step instructions. If your goal is to set up a proxy server for yourself, then the only way you’ll ever be able to do that, is to learn how to do it. And in order to learn how to setup a proxy of your own (unless you’re planning to learn server programming) you’ll need two things; a pre-written elite proxy script, and step by step instructions (both of which are included in the 10 minute tutorial). This is an “Elite” Proxy, otherwise known as a “High Anonymous Proxy”, because it’s the ONLY type of proxy that cannot be detected, it uses the identification header packets of a residential pc, instead of server headers, and thus, electronically, it looks like a regular old home computer.

Why Should I Set Up a Proxy Server?

Obviously there are a multitude of reasons why someone would want to set up a proxy server, but the underlying reason has to do with privacy and hiding or changing your ip address from the one your ISP assigned to you, to the ip address of the proxy server. The most common reason to set up a proxy server is probably just as simple as not wanting anyone knowing who or where you are (or more specifically; where you’re connecting to the internet from). Your ip address doesn’t (and can’t) specifically name you, but it can narrow down where you are, and of course your ISP CAN specifically name you. They are the ones that assigned you your ip address, and thus, they certainly have a record of who they assigned it to (ie, your exact name, street address, phone number, bank/billing institution, credit rating/report et cetera).

In addition to your ISP knowing your ip address; individual websites also know your ip address, and track your activities on their sites accross every session. They actually have a specific database exclusively for your ip address. Which means that they know everything you do while on their site, how often you visit, how long you spend there, what content you’ve read, written, watched or listened to while there, what website you came from before going there, and on and on and on. And it’s even worse (obviously) if you also have an account with them, because now their database also has any personal data you’ve given them, matched up with your ip address.

And to compound this even further, anything that you type into a form field is also recorded into the database associated with your exact ip address. Can you guess what form field internet users type information into more than any other? That’s right; search fields. Every single thing you have ever searched for is sitting in a database with your ip address attached to it. Which obviously is even more alarming (as mentioned above) if the you also have an account with the same company that you perform your searches with (can you spell gooooooogle, yahooooooooo, facebook, etc).

This is just scratching the surface (we haven’t even talked about cencorship, being blocked from viewing certain content, or being blocked from using or posting on certain sites yet) but by far, the main reason you should set up a proxy server is to protect your identity, remain anonymous, and avoid being tracked and recorded like cattle. Setting up your own private proxy server solves all those issues.

Why Should I Learn How to Set Up Proxy Server of My Own?

If you learn how to set up a proxy server of your own (for your own personal/private use) you don’t ever need to worry about who owns the proxy server you’re using, and what they’re doing with all the information you’re sending through it (because it’s YOU that owns it). Maybe you didn’t realize this, but proxy owners can (and definitely do) LEGALLY, track, record, intecept, alter, redirect, and even SELL, any data running through their servers (because they’re their servers; they own them, they can legally do pretty much anything they want to with any data routed through it).

If you learn how to set up a proxy server for yourself, not only do you solve this “Evil-Middle-Man” senario, but you also have the freedom to change your ip address as often as you like, add or remove ip addresses from your proxy server, and even set up multiple proxy servers in multiple cities, states, countries, and thus have multiple ip address from different geographic locations.

So when you learn to make the proxy server yourself; it’s a skill that you will have forever. This is so much more useful than just knowing how to use a proxy server, because if you LEARN how to set them up yourself, you’ll never have to worry about finding proxies to use, because you can just set up a new one for yourself anytime you like.

Who Should Learn How to Set Up a Proxy?

To begin with (and without any exaggeration whatsoever) it’s my opinion that any person using the internet should learn how to set up proxy servers. Maybe you think you have nothing to hide, and maybe you really don’t, but it’s a simple matter of respecting ones privacy. Are you snooping on them? Then why let them snoop on you? Provided you’re not maliciously interferring in someone else’s life, or knowingly, intentionally hurting someone else, then what you do (or search for, or read, or write, or watch, or listen to) on the internet is no one’s business but yours. You were born onto this planet a self-contained individual; and how you choose to play this game of life is entirely up to you; and no business of these control freaks that think they have the right to control what other people do.

Setting Up a Proxy Server (aka, Setting Up a Private High Anonymous Elite Proxy Server)

, means that in addition to hiding your ip address and where you live, it also hides itself. What’s the point of hiding your ip and location, if everyone knows exactly what you’re doing? What’s the point of changing your ip address if everyone can see that you’re changing it? Elite is the only way to go when it comes to proxies. No other type of proxy can do that. And since you’re setting it up yourself, on your own remote server account, it means that it’s 100% private. You are the only person with access to it. In fact, you will be the only person that even knows that it exists.

Obviously that means two important things: security & speed. You won’t be sharing bandwidth with anyone, and you won’t be spying on & tracking yourself. This is the whole point of setting up a private elite proxy server. You hide / change your ip address, you hide your real location, you hide the fact that you’re hiding it, you don’t share bandwidth, and no one can track what you’re doing online (not even your isp, or search engines). You can unblock / bypass ANY website, because you’ll never have to go to websites “directly” ever again, because your proxy will go to them for you. You can’t leave any footprints behind, because you were never actually there.

And let’s not forget about your family’s security, and online privacy. How can an online predator find you or your kids if they go looking for you in a city in which you do NOT live? If you live in Boston (for example) but your elite proxy server is located in Denver, then your computer appears to be connecting to the internet from somewhere in Denver (ie, NOT where you really live). The same goes for search engines. Google can’t build a profile of you, if it doesn’t know that it’s you typing in the seach queries. How can you be typing a search string into google from Denver, when you’re not in Denver, google just thinks it’s someone that actually lives in Denver that’s searching for those things. When you set up proxy server yourself, you’re hiding your identity and location. No one can track you, no one can build a database profile of you and your family.

There are Two Distinct Types of Reasons to Learn How to Set Up a Proxy Server:

People wanting to know how to setup elite proxies generally fall into two camps. There are those that want to hide/change their ip address and location for online privacy and anonymity (including from spam filters and such). And then there are those who need to bypass blocking proxies set up by their schools, employers, governments, isp’s and such to censor certain websites and content. It’s important to understand that elite proxies work equally well in both camps, and that the steps to create a proxy server are exactly the same either way.

Do You Want to Learn How to Set Up a Proxy Server to Change Your IP Address & Geo-Location?

(which includes bypassing spam filters / IP filters, for posting and such). This reason to set up proxy server is for online privacy. An elite proxy is an advanced form of anonymous proxy (it’s advanced because it also hides the fact that you’re using a proxy server). If you want to change the ip address your web browser uses to connect to the internet, this is the way to go. No one can detect your real ip address or where you are. No one can build a database profile of you, and no one can track the websites you visit, or what you do while you’re there (because you never actually are there, only the elite proxy server was there, you never actually were). This is also the camp you fall into if your goal is to appear to be a different person, or multiple different people, for having multiple accounts at websites, or posting from multiple cities and such.

Or Do You Want to Learn How to Set Up a Proxy Server to Unblock & Bypass Censored Websites?

The next camp of people wanting to set up proxy server, are those who are being censored from viewing or using certain websites. You belong to this camp if your work computer is filtered through a blocking proxy/filtering proxy. Or if your school computer (or at least the connection you have to use from school, even if the actual computer belongs to you). Other people in this same camp are those either traveling to, or living in, countries with government censoring of websites, that block the ones it deems inappropriote. Sometimes those governments use the actual internet service providers themselves as the blocking proxy (ie, the isp’s in the country are ordered to block certain content). Typically websites that become very popular are the ones that get blocked most often. And to make the whole proxy issue even more confusing for those unfamiliar with them; people often use the name of the site they’re being blocked from using, as the name for the proxy. For example, they may say: I need an orkut proxy, gmail proxy, twitter proxy, facebook proxy, youtube proxy, etc.. The fact is, all of those sites need the exact same kind of proxy server, a “high anonymous proxy server” (ie, elite proxy server) as we’ve been discussing.

What are the Basic Steps Involved in Setting Up a Proxy Server of My Own?

Basically, there are four things you need to get in order to set up proxy server for yourself. You need a private ip address (or more than one if you like). You need a remote server account. You need pre-written “plug-in” elite proxy scripts. And (obviously) you need instructions for how to combine those first three things into an elite proxy server.

The first two are covered by getting a cheap, bare-bones, remote, virtual private server account (a VPS). A VPS is a partition of a dedicated server, and thus just as private, but much less costly (typically less than $10 bucks/month for the cheap ones we need). VPS’s have their own private ip address already, so we use it’s ip and geo-location instead of our own real ip address and location (and can also be configured to use multiple ip addresses).

The next two requirements are covered by my 10 minute proxy tutorial download. I’ve already pre-written all the proxy scripting for you. The tutorial shows you step by step exactly how to do it (with screen shots for every step).

How Much Will it Cost to Set Up a Proxy Server of My Own?

Less than $10 bucks a month for the remote vps account, and $20 bucks to learn how to set up proxy server (ie, to learn how to turn the vps into your own personal elite proxy server). So for $20 bucks you learn a new (and very useful) skill. Once you learn how to do this, you’ll be able to set up proxy servers for yourself forever. The first time you setup proxy server for your own personal use, it typically takes non-programmers about 10-15 minutes (it takes me about 5-10). It really doesn’t require any actual skills other than typing a tiny bit, copying and pasting. This is how you change you ip address, and this is also how you unblock censored websites, and this is how you hide the fact that you’re doing either of those things. The actual setup is a simple matter of typing in (or pasting in) about 8 to 10 command lines, which (you do the math) shouldn’t take more than what … 5-10 minutes max? There are no actual skills or…

Learn How to Set Up Squid Proxy Server Proxies

Using squid-cache to set up your elite proxy is a fairly simple process if you know how to configure squid’s squid.conf file (ie, squid’s configuration file). Or, if you can get the file already pre-configured for you (hint, hint). The squid.conf file has several variables that can be altered, turned on or off, and pieced together in different ways to create the exact configuration you need. One such configuration is the elite proxy configuration we use here (also sometimes referred to as a high anonymous proxy configuration). Squid itself is…

A Few Benefits of Learning How to Set Up Proxy Server

Obviously there are numerous benefits of learning how to set up proxy server, so I’m only covering the most basic ones here. You likely already have your own reasons for wanting to “have” and “use” a private elite proxy server, so these are just a few benefits for “learning how to” set up proxy server. Learning how to set one up for yourself is most beneficial I would say, because it means that you don’t have to go searching around for proxies anymore. You also don’t have to try to rely on using someone else’s slow sketchy…
