How to Set Up a bitTorrent Proxy Server

Set up a bitTorrent proxy server for downloading torrent files via the bitTorrent client anonymously without your ISP (or anyone else for that matter) knowing that you’re doing it. A high anonymous elite proxy server setup (here) serves as the torrent proxy server (here). Once you set up the proxy, just put the proxy’s ip address and port number into the bitTorrent client’s connection settings section under the “Proxy Server” label (options >> preferences >> connection).

I’m assuming you already know why you need to set up a bitTorrent proxy, but just in case you don’t, I’ll give you the highlights. The main reason is because of ISP blocking, throttling, tracking, recording, monitoring, etc, of torrent downloads. ISP’s don’t generally even attempt to make any distinction between legal torrent downloads and illegal torrent downloads (if there is such a thing that is) so they end up just throttling bandwidth or flatout blocking ALL torrents. But even if your ISP is not blocking or throttling your downloads, it’s still a very very good idea to use a bittorrent proxy server because ALL ISP’s DO, monitor, track & record ALL internet activities that run through them (including torrents obviously).

As you likely already know, an elite proxy server is the only type of proxy server that cannot be detected (ie, undetectable high anonymous elite proxies), so not only will your isp NOT know that you’re downloading torrents, they also won’t even know that you’re using a proxy, or that you even have a proxy. And since probably about 90 some percent of internet users don’t even know what an elite proxy server is; it isn’t very likely that your isp would even suspect the use of a proxy. But it still wouldn’t matter even if they did suspect it because they would never be able to detect it, and certainly not be able to detect anything you’re doing with it. In fact, it’s my opinion that isp’s don’t even care about proxy servers because such a tiny tiny percentage of people even know what they are; proxy server users obviously aren’t effecting isp’s in any significant way. But again … who cares if they do? Elite proxies are undetectable; so this whole thing is very easy to understand: If you want to download torrents anonymously, set up and use a torrent proxy (bittorrent proxy).

Is Setting Up an Elite bitTorrent Proxy Server Difficult?

Like most everything else in life; that depends. If you’re going to set it up from scratch by yourself without any help; then yes, it can be a bit complex. However, you don’t need to set it up from scratch anymore, and my 10 minute proxy server tutorial gives you all the help you could possibly need. In the old days, you would have had to learn server programming, and then also learn all about installing and configuring the squid proxy framework. Back then, no one bothered setting up a simple solution for non-programmers because back then renting a dedicated server to set the proxy script up on was so expensive that no average web server (or torrent downloader) could afford to have their own personal proxy server.

That all changed with the advent of cheap computer storage space, and thus, the “unmanaged vps” virtual private server partition (a full dedicated server partitioned off into much much smaller, and thus, much much cheaper sections). Even a “managed” vps server is extremely cheap for a personal remote server, but the “unmanaged” ones are dirt cheap (often as low as about $6 or $10 bucks per month).

At that point everyone familiar with remote server hosting (programmer types and such) abandoned their high priced dedicated remote servers, and started using these vps’s as remote proxy servers instead. Proxy server scripting basically takes up zero space on a server, so all that’s really needed is a bare-metal drop box with nothing more than an operating system and an ip address on it (which is pretty much all these cheap unmanaged vps’s have, so it’s perfect). Vps’s weren’t intended to be used as proxy servers, but looking at how perfectly configured for them they are, one could easily think that they were invented specifically for elite proxies (a bare metal box with an OS and an IP; perfect, and perfectly efficient).

So now that the cheap remote server hosting was covered by vps’s; there were only two other obstacles left preventing average web surfers from setting up their own personal proxy servers. The first was a knowledge of proxy scripting, and how to install and configure that scripting on the remote server (all of which (you may have guessed) is now covered in my 10 minute proxy tutorial). But instead of learning how to do all the installing and configuring yourself; I’ve set it up so that all you have to do is type 5 short command lines into an SSH terminal. I’ve already pre-configured all the proxy scripting, so those 5 short command lines activate my scripts, which in turn, then do all the work of turning the remote server into a proxy server for you).

So then the last obstacle was what I just briefly mentioned (an understanding of how to use an SSH client/terminal). Most people don’t know how to connect to a remote server, but programmer types have been doing it forever (and they do it using what’s called an SSH client). In practical terms; an SSH client isn’t all that much different than a web client (ie, web “browser”) in that it allows you to connect to a remote server). The big difference is that a web browser only lets you “view” the files in the “public/www” folder of that remote server (ie, “viewing” “webpages”).

An SSH client, on the other hand, allows you to edit, install, configure, et cetera, files in the “root” folder/directory of that remote server. Check this page for screen shots, and a better understanding of how easy it is to use an SSH client to connect to a remote server; for the purpose of installing a proxy script on that remote server (ie, typing in my 5 short command lines).

So, to answer the original question; if someone has already pre-done more than 90+% of the work for you already, then no, setting up your own elite bittorrent proxy server is not difficult at all. In fact (as I obviously take every opportunity to state) the actuall set up literally takes less than about 10 minutes (depending mostly upon whether you type in the 5 command lines, or paste them in). — You Are Here: Set Up a bitTorrent Proxy Server

OPTION #1:

Standard Version

Use this option to set up as many elite proxy servers as you want to for the rest of your life. It will never become outdated because the script automatically updates itself every time you use it.

  $14.99

OPTION #2:

Advanced Version

Same as option #1 above but also includes instructions for putting multiple ip addresses on the same proxy server. Don't bother with this option if you only need 1 new ip address (most users) but if you want to put lots of different ip addresses all on the same proxy then this is the option for you.
