Remote Proxy Server: Configure Your Own Remote Proxy Server on a VPS

My proxy server tutorial (above) shows you how to configure your own remote proxy server on a cheap virtual private server (vps). VPS’s are really cheap these days, and the ones needed for a remote proxy server are the cheapest of all. A proxy script takes up basically no space on the server, so we only need a remote server with very minimal resources.

A vps is a dedicated server partition (with it’s own built-in ip address). It gives you all the freedom and privacy of a full dedicated server, but at a fraction of the price (literally). If you’ve ever partitioned the hard drive on your own pc, you already have a good idea how this works. The vps hosting company gives you root access to the vps, so instead of loading it with a website script (for example) you load it with an elite proxy server script instead. The elite proxy script is open-source, so the only real work involved is commanding the server to upload and install the proxy script onto itself, and then making some adjustments specific to the vps’s ip address (all the scripts needed to acomplish this are included in my proxy server tutorial, so all you have to do is paste in the scripts, and then the server will go to work installing the proxy). There is a bit of typing involved because we need to set your remote proxy server to allow you to connect to it remotely via your normal web browser (which basically just means configuring username and password restrictions so that you are the only person that can access the remote proxy server). This is a fairly simple endeavor and this Screen Shot shows how to easily change the ip connection setting in your browser (alternately, firefox has some really good ip switching add-ons).

This Screen Shot shows the basic benefit of a remote proxy (ie, that where ever the proxy is connecting from, is where you appear to be connecting from, instead of from where you really are). When you set up proxy server for yourself on a remote server, the end result is that you (your web browser) never actually has to connect to anything directly. Your remote server will connect for you, and bring back the websites for you. And thus, you (and your ip address, and your physical location) remain anonymous. There can be no record of you having been there, because you never actually were (only the elite proxy server was).

As a final note; the reason we use an “elite” proxy is because an elite proxy server is the only type of proxy server that cannot be detected, it perfectly mimics a residencial pc (ie, it uses the exact same identification headers that a normal home computer uses). Regular old anonymous proxies hide your ip address, but they also reveal themselves to be a proxy server (by using the identification headers of a server). Elite proxies are anonymous proxies, but with the huge added bonus of also hiding themselves (ie, hiding the fact that you’re using a proxy server to hide change you ip address and geo-location, et cetera). This is important because to be truly anonymous (if you’re employing Black Hat strategies for example) you need to appear to be a regular person sitting on a home pc in some other state. If you appear to be connecting through a server instead, it becomes exceedingly obvious that you’re using a remote proxy to hide something. Obviously being as inconspicuous as possible is a big advantage. An elite proxy allows you to blend in without raising any flags.
