There are obviously multiple reasons for needing to have it appear as if you are connecting to the internet from a geo-location that is inside the United States. This is equally true of people that live in countries outside the U.S. and for those of us that live in the states but also travel abroad for business or vacations. There are many websites and also many online accounts that I can’t access from a normal foreign connection without the use of a good highly anonymous proxy server with USA IP addresses.

The best, easiest, cheapest way to accomplish this is to rent United States proxy ‘server’ (ie, a remote VPS server that you then set up a proxy server on). A remote VPS server from a US hosting company typically only costs about $6). VPS servers already have their own IP addresses on them by default because IP addresses are specifically assigned by the geographic location where the server is sitting. So, for example, if you are living in or visiting Canada, but you’ve set up your proxy server on a remote VPS server sitting in a data-center in Chicago (or any other United States city) when you connect to the internet through your undetectable (ie, ‘elite’) proxy instead of trying to connect directly, then it looks like you are actually connecting directing from inside the states (Chicago in this example).

One of the big benefits of setting up a proxy server yourself (on a rented vps server) is that you don’t have to share bandwidth with anyone else because when you set it up yourself it’s a private proxy server so no one else even knows that it exists (and therefore, obviously can’t use it either).

Another big reason for setting up a proxy yourself is that you can configure it to be a high anonymity proxy (commonly referred to as an elite proxy) instead of a plain old anonymous proxy. That’s important because elite proxies are the only type of proxies that are undetectable, meaning that no one can tell that you’re using a proxy server to hide your real IP address and hide the location of the city or country that you’re connecting from. If you rent United States proxy server that isn’t running an elite proxy script then everyone can very easily see that you are using a proxy to hide your location (not a good thing obviously).

So basically instead of renting expensive proxies from someone else just rent a dirt cheap VPS server instead, and then just load the proxy script onto it yourself. It’s a lot cheaper, you can have multiple USA IP addresses on the same server, it’s incredibly easy to setup (using my tutorial) it’s undetectable, and it’s also way faster and more secure than rented proxies because you don’t share it with anyone else.

Internet service providers have been spying on us for years now (and many even believe that they’re being forced to in some cases by certain agencies) but these days they’re getting a lot better at detecting the types of files that we’re downloading. This is especially interesting for people that download (and more importantly, upload or seed) torrent files.

Obviously the fact that you’re here at this particular site though suggests that you’re already well aware of that fact and are probably looking for a way to torrent through a proxy rather than doing it directly. I’ve been doing it this way for years and it’s actually one of the main reasons I started this site. Setting up a torrent proxy used to be somewhat complicated but a lot has changed in recent years and I’ve actually played a small part in that change. The elite proxy tutorial that I sell on this site shows you how to set one up very very easily. I designed it specifically for non-programmers because not everyone has the time or desire to get into all the normal complexities of server programming.

Now I’m not suggesting that I had anything to do with creating the proxy framework itself (we can rely on the open-source squid3 proxy framework for that). What I did was put together a simple way for non-programmers to implement squid’s awesome abilities without having to actually understand the complexities behind it. I did this by creating a proxy setup script that installs squid FOR YOU. All you have to do is follow along with my very simple step by step instructions (which equates to typing in the 5 or 6 short command lines that I give you) and you can have your own personal torrent proxy setup in about 10 minutes (seriously). I’ve taken care of all the complicated stuff for you ahead of time in my pre-configured proxy script. So all you have to do is call-up my script (by typing in the command lines mentioned above) and let it go to work setting up the proxy for you.

An elite proxy server is an amazing & popular tool these days but too many people fail to learn how to actually use one before they set it up and start using it to hide their ip address. Setting it up and hiding your ip with it is the easy part, but no type of proxy can protect you if you fail to use it properly.

1 – Clear Your Browser’s Cache & Cookies Prior to Switching to Your New IP Address

This is one of the easiest steps to forget if you’re new to using proxies. Websites track you by your computer’s ip address, but ALSO by setting tracking cookies on your machine. It doesn’t matter that you switch your ip if the site’s tracking cookies are still on your computer like a big old homing beacon telling them that you’re still the same person you were a few minutes ago.

2 – Use Different User Accounts with Each of Your New IP Addresses

If you’re using your proxy ip to create multiple user accounts at websites, then you defeat the whole purpose of changing the ip if you login and basically just flat out tell them that you are the same person. This sounds pretty obvious I know, but this is one of the top 5 emails I get from people claiming that their proxy is being detected. People tend to forget that databases NEVER forget anything (ever).

3 – Do Not Share Your Proxy with Your Friends!

If your friend needs a new ip and wants to set up his or her own proxy, then by all means show them how to do it (or better yet, send them here to learn w/ my 10 minute elite proxy tutorial) but it always ends up being a problem when people share the same proxy and/or the same ip.

For one thing; because people lie to each other constantly about what they did or didn’t do while using the proxy.

For another thing; because it eats bandwidth & slows down the connection dramatically when multiple people are using it at the same time.

For yet another thing; because if two people go to the same site (or network of sites) from the same ip address, that ip address with instantly be flagged as a “file sharing device” (ie, a proxy server).

And finally; because if your friend abuses your proxy and gets it’s ip address burned, then your proxy becomes basically useless and you’ll have to start all over again and setup a new one. That doesn’t take much effort obviously, but it’s still annoying having to do it for something so stupid.

A high anonymous elite proxy server is the ideal uTorrent proxy (mostly because it’s private, but also because it’s undetectable).

If you use the utorrent bittorrent client, and you want your torrent downloading (and seeding) activities to be private and hidden then you’ll need to learn about setting up a utorrent proxy server (aka, torrent proxy or bittorrent proxy).

Obviously the best type of proxy server there is, is an elite proxy server (because it’s the only type of proxy server that’s undetectable) so that’s what we use for setting up a utorrent proxy server.

A torrent proxy server is needed for hiding your downloading activities because you need the downloads (and more importantly; the uploads) to be made from an ip address other than your own real ip address.

What you do is download (and upload) through the proxy server, instead of downloading (and uploading) directly with your own ip address.

After you’ve set up your proxy server on a remote hosted VPS server using my 10-minute tutorial, you take the ip address that comes by default with the remote vps, and paste it into utorrent’s connection settings section:

Options >>> Preferences >>> Connection (see screen-shot below).

Also type in the port number of the utorrent proxy server, the username, and the password you established while setting up the proxy (all of which is shown step by step in the tutorial).

Why Should I Set Up a uTorrent Proxy Server?

How Do I Configure uTorrent to Use My Proxy?

How Long Will it Take to Set Up My uTorrent Proxy

uTorrent Proxy Settings Screen Shot Photo

By changing those connection settings in the utorrent client, you have effectively bypassed your ISP and any snooping, tracking, recording, monitoring, or blocking they can do (because they can no longer see what you’re doing or what you’re downloading, because the proxy server is actually downloading the torrents for you). If you search for torrents directly in the utorrent interface, then your searches will also be covered, but if you use your browser for the torrent searches, then I would also suggest changing the connection settings in your browser too [Firefox Connection Settings Screen Shot] (so that your web browser also connects through your utorrent proxy server).

Why Should I Set Up a uTorrent Proxy Server?

The first reason is almost always to hide your torrent downloading from your ISP, but another big reason is bandwidth speeds. If you use a shared public proxy for downloading, obviously it’s going to be a heck of a lot slower than if you’re the only person downloading torrents through the proxy server. So if you set up your own, then you’re the only one with access to it, and thus, the only person downloading through it, and thus, it’s not slow like a shared proxy server.

Plus, when you learn how to set up a proxy server for yourself, you don’t have to keep trying to find new proxies to use, because no one is abusing the ip address of your personal utorrent proxy, and thus, it will last pretty much forever. You don’t have to change the connection settings in the utorrent client all the time because your private proxy’s ip address can be used basically forever. In fact if you learn how to set it up yourself, you could even setup multiple utorrent proxies if you like. Or even put multiple ip addresses on the same proxy. That’s as easy as ordering a few extra ip addresses from the vps hosting company that you’ve set your proxy up on, and then following the quick instructions (in my tutorial) for adding the extra ip’s to the proxy’s config file.

How Do I Configure uTorrent to Use My Proxy?

The screen shot below shows the exact settings for configuring utorrent to connect through your proxy server instead of through the ip address assigned by your intenet provider. When you sign up for the virtual private server (vps) that you’re going to setup your elite (torrent) proxy on, the vps hosting company will email you the ip address of that particular vps. Then when you’re setting up the proxy, you’ll use that ip address in the proxy’s configuration file (explained in the tut) and assign it your own username and password. Those will be the username and password you plug into utorrent’s proxy server settings. You can see in the screen shot below: In the “proxy” field, you put your new proxy’s ip address and port 3128. In the “username” field where it says “account1″, that’s your personal proxy username that you assign it while setting up the proxy, and in the “password” field you put in the password you assigned to that username while setting up your proxy server.

How Long Will it Take to Set Up My uTorrent Proxy?

The actual set up literally takes less than 10 minutes. All you have to do is type 5 short command lines into an SSH client, and type your vps’s ip address into the squid.conf file (the proxy’s configuration file). I’ve already pre-configured everything else. So when you type in those command lines, they’ll activate my elite proxy scripts, which will, in turn, download, install, and configure the proxy for you onto your vps. Before you can do the actual setup though, you need to get the server (the vps server) and typically vps companies will send you the login details for your vps within a few minutes. Some hosting companies take longer than others, but I’ve never had a hosting company take longer than a few hours to send me the vps login details, and like I said, usually it’s only a few minutes (even the companies that say it might take up to 24hrs usually send it a lot sooner than that). So once you actually get the login details for the vps, the process of turning that vps into an elite utorrent proxy (ie, the actual proxy setup time is about 10 minutes depending on how fast you type or paste). — You Are Here: Setting Up a uTorrent Proxy Server

Starting in (or around) version 2.2, uTorrent has now made anonymous torrent downloading a heck of a lot better. * Note: I said, “in (or around)” because I have to admit, I skipped over a few versions, and missed a few updates, so these changes may actually have happened earlier, but at the time of this writing, the latest version that has the changes is 2.2.

I’m extremely happy with utorrent for making these changes, both from a personal standpoint, and from a professional one. From the personal perspective, I’m happy because I can now download anonymously myself. And from the professional perspective, I’m extremely happy because these great new changes to utorrent have given my business a really nice bump in sales of my 10 minute elite proxy server tutorial and setup service … ie, from utorrent users wanting to set up an undetectable high anonymous elite torrent proxy (learn how to do that here).

The changes I’m referring to are in the “Connection Settings” section of the utorrent client below the “Proxy Server” heading, and labeled “Proxy Privacy”. uTorrent added three new functions under this proxy privacy heading that will make utorrent proxy users very very happy. Note: I am going to briefly describe why these changes are good for us, but keep in mind; I’m just giving a surface description based on what the labels say they do, and thus, my explanations are verly likely to be extremely simplified (for a more indepth explanation of these updates, refer to utorrent’s actual documentation).

Disable All Local DNS Lookups:

DNS stands for “domain name server”. What it does is translate a domain name into it’s ip address. Whenever you go to a server via it’s domian name address, the request first has to use a DNS to convert that domain name to it’s corresponding ip address in order to actually connect to that server. When this happens; your ISP (for one) can see the url/domain you’re looking up, and thus, obviously, see what you’re attempting to connect to. Why is this good for torrent proxy users? Because now (if you check the “disable all local dns lookups” box) your ISP can no longer see any of that (if you’re using an elite proxy that is).

Disable Features that Leak Identifying Info:

Now I haven’t actually dug down deep enough to find out what these “features that leak identifying information” that this is referring to, actually are, but I’d say this speaks for itself. Any features of utorrent that would normally leak your real ip address when using your torrent proxy are now disabled (if you check this box). I can’t even begin to imagine why that wasn’t done right from the start when the proxy server settings were first implemented, but I’m sure happy it’s there now.

Disable Connections Unsupported by the Proxy:

Now this one used to really really annoy the hell out of me. I discovered this issue (prior to the new v2.2 changes) quite a long time ago. I had the ip address of one of my elite proxies loaded into utorrent (including it’s port, username & password) and was uploading & downloading all my torrents through my proxy server (so I thought).

The vps hosting company I was using for that particular elite proxy ip ended up offering an even cheaper vps than the one I was using, so I cancelled that vps and ordered one of their cheaper plans. Of course that meant that when I set up my new elite proxy on the new vps, it obviously had a different ip address, username and password than the one I had been using. Now I have a lot of elite proxy servers that I built myself, so at the time I did all this, I hadn’t realized that that was the proxy server I was using as my torrent proxy; so I never changed the proxy settings in the utorrent client. If you haven’t figured this out yet; the proxy server that I was using for utorrent downloading no longer existed (but was still in my utorrent settings).

Now you would have expected (since the proxy server no longer existed) that utorrent wouldn’t work (ie, you would expect the connection to fail because there was no connection, since the proxy server was now gone). Well when I finally discovered that utorrent was still working perfectly even though my proxy server no longer existed I was pretty pissed to say the least; obviously utorrent was ignoring my proxy settings and just connecting directly instead. After researching this, I found out that this was exactly what was happening. Prior to utorrent version 2.2; if utorrent couldn’t make a connection to your proxy server, it would just ignore that setting and connect directly. Are you kidding me? No warning, no failure to connect? That’s right; prior to this new “disable connections unsupported by the proxy” setting, that’s how it worked. Pretty sad ‘ay? Well luckily that’s all fixed now, and any “connections unsupported by the proxy” are now disabled.

Conclusion:

So there you have it; if you use your high anonymous elite proxy server as a torrent proxy, you better update to utorrent version 2.2. * Note: Unlike me, most utorrent proxy users probably only have one elite proxy ip anyway, so this wouldn’t have been an issue for them, because they would have known that the proxy setting in utorrent was still set to a non-existing proxy server. — You Are Here: Torrent Proxy Users Should Update to uTorrent v2.2

Set up a bitTorrent proxy server for downloading torrent files via the bitTorrent client anonymously without your ISP (or anyone else for that matter) knowing that you’re doing it. A high anonymous elite proxy server setup (here) serves as the torrent proxy server (here). Once you set up the proxy, just put the proxy’s ip address and port number into the bitTorrent client’s connection settings section under the “Proxy Server” label (options >> preferences >> connection).

I’m assuming you already know why you need to set up a bitTorrent proxy, but just in case you don’t, I’ll give you the highlights. The main reason is because of ISP blocking, throttling, tracking, recording, monitoring, etc, of torrent downloads. ISP’s don’t generally even attempt to make any distinction between legal torrent downloads and illegal torrent downloads (if there is such a thing that is) so they end up just throttling bandwidth or flatout blocking ALL torrents. But even if your ISP is not blocking or throttling your downloads, it’s still a very very good idea to use a bittorrent proxy server because ALL ISP’s DO, monitor, track & record ALL internet activities that run through them (including torrents obviously).

As you likely already know, an elite proxy server is the only type of proxy server that cannot be detected (ie, undetectable high anonymous elite proxies), so not only will your isp NOT know that you’re downloading torrents, they also won’t even know that you’re using a proxy, or that you even have a proxy. And since probably about 90 some percent of internet users don’t even know what an elite proxy server is; it isn’t very likely that your isp would even suspect the use of a proxy. But it still wouldn’t matter even if they did suspect it because they would never be able to detect it, and certainly not be able to detect anything you’re doing with it. In fact, it’s my opinion that isp’s don’t even care about proxy servers because such a tiny tiny percentage of people even know what they are; proxy server users obviously aren’t effecting isp’s in any significant way. But again … who cares if they do? Elite proxies are undetectable; so this whole thing is very easy to understand: If you want to download torrents anonymously, set up and use a torrent proxy (bittorrent proxy).

Is Setting Up an Elite bitTorrent Proxy Server Difficult?

Like most everything else in life; that depends. If you’re going to set it up from scratch by yourself without any help; then yes, it can be a bit complex. However, you don’t need to set it up from scratch anymore, and my 10 minute proxy server tutorial gives you all the help you could possibly need. In the old days, you would have had to learn server programming, and then also learn all about installing and configuring the squid proxy framework. Back then, no one bothered setting up a simple solution for non-programmers because back then renting a dedicated server to set the proxy script up on was so expensive that no average web server (or torrent downloader) could afford to have their own personal proxy server.

That all changed with the advent of cheap computer storage space, and thus, the “unmanaged vps” virtual private server partition (a full dedicated server partitioned off into much much smaller, and thus, much much cheaper sections). Even a “managed” vps server is extremely cheap for a personal remote server, but the “unmanaged” ones are dirt cheap (often as low as about $6 or $10 bucks per month).

At that point everyone familiar with remote server hosting (programmer types and such) abandoned their high priced dedicated remote servers, and started using these vps’s as remote proxy servers instead. Proxy server scripting basically takes up zero space on a server, so all that’s really needed is a bare-metal drop box with nothing more than an operating system and an ip address on it (which is pretty much all these cheap unmanaged vps’s have, so it’s perfect). Vps’s weren’t intended to be used as proxy servers, but looking at how perfectly configured for them they are, one could easily think that they were invented specifically for elite proxies (a bare metal box with an OS and an IP; perfect, and perfectly efficient).

So now that the cheap remote server hosting was covered by vps’s; there were only two other obstacles left preventing average web surfers from setting up their own personal proxy servers. The first was a knowledge of proxy scripting, and how to install and configure that scripting on the remote server (all of which (you may have guessed) is now covered in my 10 minute proxy tutorial). But instead of learning how to do all the installing and configuring yourself; I’ve set it up so that all you have to do is type 5 short command lines into an SSH terminal. I’ve already pre-configured all the proxy scripting, so those 5 short command lines activate my scripts, which in turn, then do all the work of turning the remote server into a proxy server for you).

So then the last obstacle was what I just briefly mentioned (an understanding of how to use an SSH client/terminal). Most people don’t know how to connect to a remote server, but programmer types have been doing it forever (and they do it using what’s called an SSH client). In practical terms; an SSH client isn’t all that much different than a web client (ie, web “browser”) in that it allows you to connect to a remote server). The big difference is that a web browser only lets you “view” the files in the “public/www” folder of that remote server (ie, “viewing” “webpages”).

An SSH client, on the other hand, allows you to edit, install, configure, et cetera, files in the “root” folder/directory of that remote server. Check this page for screen shots, and a better understanding of how easy it is to use an SSH client to connect to a remote server; for the purpose of installing a proxy script on that remote server (ie, typing in my 5 short command lines).

So, to answer the original question; if someone has already pre-done more than 90+% of the work for you already, then no, setting up your own elite bittorrent proxy server is not difficult at all. In fact (as I obviously take every opportunity to state) the actuall set up literally takes less than about 10 minutes (depending mostly upon whether you type in the 5 command lines, or paste them in). — You Are Here: Set Up a bitTorrent Proxy Server

Your torrent proxy server will start working immediately after you set it up. So if it takes you ten minutes to set it up, then it will start working in ten minutes. The vps server will be online as soon as the hosting company sends you your order confirmation email with the vps server’s ip address and root password. You can check to be sure, either by pinging the ip address, or by just starting the proxy setup (ie, if you can login to the vps via the secure shell, putty or jellyfissh for example, then you will know that the server is online, and ready for you to start installing my proxy script). So then just set up the torrent proxy server (here) according to the instructions in the 10 minute tutorial (10 minute elite proxy tutorial), change the ip address in your torrent client program, and then start downloading torrents anonymously … immediately.

When you first start downloading torrents through the proxy server, and depending on the hosting company you chose, it might be a bit slower than your normal connection at first. For reasons I can’t entirely explain, the first few hours to a day tend to be a bit sluggish with some hosts, but generally picks up to normal rates thereafter. If the connection ever slows down after that initial first few hours or so, just contact the hosting company. Don’t get too upiddy though; just like the connection from your ISP, connection speeds vary and slow on occassion, and obviously work better during off-peak hours when less people are downloading torrents.

Also remember that your vps hosting company doesn’t neccessarily know that you’ve set up a proxy on their server (unless you’ve told them, obviously) so if you ever do need to contact them (and even if they allow personal proxies) it’s probably best not to mention proxies, and especially not torrent downloading. So DON’T say, “My proxy is slow” nor “My torrent downloads are slow”; instead, just say, “My server connection is slow”. This is very rarely an issue anyway, but good to know if it comes up.

It’s also always a good idea to ping your vps before starting the process of setting up your torrent proxy on it (or if it ever stops working for more than a few minutes). http://www.just-ping.com is a simple website for pinging remote servers (ie, for checking to see if the server is actually online/connected). Just paste your vps’s ip address into the form field at just-ping, and it will try to establish a connection to the server from various geographic locations around the world. Minimal packet loss is fairly normal and generally isn’t an issue, but if you’re getting 100% packet loss from every location it tries, then you’ll know the server is offline. Just let the hosting company know that you got 100% packet loss when you pinged the ip address.

Again, all of this is rare anyway; hosting companies obviously don’t want their servers going down, and obviously take steps to avoid having that happen, but if yours ever does stop working; getting it back online will be a lot faster if you know what to look for. And don’t forget; it’s always better to avoid using terms like “proxy” & “torrents” when communicating with vps hosting companies. Most vps hosts do allow “personal/private” proxies, but even then, they will definitely monitor vps’s they know to be running proxies more than normal, and there’s no need to attract any extra attention (especial if you’re using it as a torrent proxy). — You Are Here: Set Up a bitTorrent Proxy Server

I’ve stopped explaining the advantages of having your own personal/private elite proxy server (that you setup yourself)) over using public proxies, because the advantages of private over public should already be pretty obvious to everyone (especially to anyone reading this site, and thus, already expressing an interest in learning how to set up a torrent proxy server of there own). As a result, this short page is just a quick explanation of what I did to make the whole process of setting up a personal proxy server so much quicker, and so much easier for non-programmers to setup for themselves with my 10 minute tutorial.

In order to set up a proxy server, you basically just need three things. You need a remote server, you need the proxy framework, and you need to know how to install the proxy framework onto the server using scipts. The absolute cheapest way to get a remote server is to rent an unmanaged vps from a vps hosting company (less than about $10 bucks/month). The absolute best way to get the proxy framework is to use the amazing open-source squid proxy framework. So then all that’s left is the knowledge for how to install and configure squid to work as an elite torrent proxy server. Traditionally (ie, until now) you would have had to learn how to do all the scripting and configuring yourself.

But now, I’ve worked out a setup where I’ve embedded command lines and scripts, inside other scripts. So instead of having to do all that scripting yourself, all you have to do is type or paste about eight to ten (5) command lines into a secure shell (SSH) (PuTTy for example on windows, or JellyFiSSH for mac). A secure shell (SSH) is nothing more than a tiny tiny program that allows you to connect securely to a remote server. Those command lines do a few different things. They update the remote vps server, they download, install, and/or update some software (wget and nano), and then using those newly installed programs, they call up my scripts, which in turn do a whole lot of other stuff; most impotantly of which, is to download and istall squid. Then another of my scripts (that’s embedded inside one of the scripts that just got called up) calls up and installs my elite proxy server configuration file (squid.conf).

But, as mentioned, all of that is pretty much transparent to you, because all you had to do was type in my commands, and then my scripts will take over and do all the actual work needed to set up the torrent proxy for you. You do need to do one tiny bit of script editing though because I can’t already know what your remote server’s ip address(es) will be. So you’ll have to type that ip address into the squid.conf file yourself. But, again, that’s incredibly simple to do, and if you remember, why one of my scripts downloaded the “nano” program. Nano will open the squid.conf file for you right inside the secure shell, so all you have to do is type in the ip address and then hit CTRL-X on your keyboard to save the edit. By the way, the other program we downloaded to the remote server (wget) is just a program that allows you to call up (ie, download and install) my scripts (including my pre-configured squid.conf file) from my website’s server. End result of all this: Using my 10 minute tutorial, all you have to do in order to setup your own torrent proxy sever to download anonymously with, is type in the 5 command lines as instructed in the tutorial. — You Are Here: Building a Better Torrent Proxy Server

The cost to set up your own torrent proxy will vary slightly depending on the vps hosting company you choose, and how much bandwidth you’re going to need, but to give you a general idea; the hosting fee for the type of bare bones unmanaged remote vps server we need, generally costs a little under $10 bucks per month, depending on the hosting company you choose. That’s for the cheapest bare-bones unmanaged vps most companies have, and will generally get you somewhere in the neighborhood of about 100GB to 1,000GB of bandwidth.

But if you need more bandwidth than that, you can always either upgrade your bandwidth, or get the next size up for somewhere in the $15 or $20 per month range (not a lot considering the free downloads you’re getting, and considering the fact that you’re now getting them anonymously). I also highly suggest shopping around a bit for vps hosting instead of just settling for the first cheap one you find, because different hosts offer very different amounts of bandwidth for that $10.

As stated, I’ve seen anywhere from 100GB to 1,000GB for around 10 bucks, but vps hosting companies vary tremendously on this. As an example, the hosting I currently have the majority of my own proxies on, and the one I recommend most often to people that hire me to set their proxies up for them, has 1,000GB for only $6 bucks a month (in case you missed it; that’s 10X as much bandwidth for about $4 less than average) ie, it pays to shop around for a remote vps host (especially for torrent downloading, as it generally uses more bandwidth than simple web browsing does).

So a rough bottom line estimate to set up your own personal anonymous torrent proxy will be somewhere around $10 bucks a month for the remote vps hosting (payable to the vps hosting company of your choice).

And don’t forget; this is an undetectable high anonymous elite proxy server you’re setting up, so not only does it hide your torrent downloads, it also hides the fact that you’re hiding them (ie, elite proxies are the only type of proxy server that cannot be detected). My point here simply being that $6 or $10 bucks a month for the hosting (and the $20 bucks to learn how to set it up for yourself with my 10 minute proxy tutorial) is a pretty good bargain I’d say (especially coming from the perspective of how much free content you’re getting from the anonymous torrent downloads resulting from it).

I don’t do all that much downloading myself, but I can easily do the math on this: If 1 CD costs 10 or 12 bucks, and/or 1 movie roughly the same, then the hosting is paid for after your first download (and call me crazy, but I’m guessing that anyone here looking to set up their own torrent proxy server is downloading a touch more than 1 CD or 1 movie per month).

Note: If you’ve read any of the other sections here on my site, you likely noticed me talking about setting up multiple ip addresses on the same proxy server, and/or even setting up multiple elite proxy servers, which adds to the monthly cost because “extra” ip addresses cost about a dollar or two per extra ip address per month, but people using their elite proxy as an elite torrent proxy shouldn’t need to worry about that because I don’t see why you would need more than 1 anonymous ip address for torrent downloading. Multiple ip’s and multiple proxy servers are more for people using the proxy server for marketing purposes, and thus, as stated, likely not needed for torrent proxy users. — You Are Here: How Much Will it Cost to Set Up My Own Personal Torrent Proxy

Yes, putting multiple ip addresses on the same high anonymous elite proxy server (in this case, your own high anonymous torrent proxy server) is very very easy to do, and most hosting companies will generally only charge you an extra dollar or two per extra ip address. And adding extra ip’s onto the proxy server only adds about another minute each onto your setup time, per ip. As far as I know the utorrent and bittorrent clients don’t have a way to load multiple ip’s at the same time, so (again, as far as I know) you would have to switch ip’s manually in the connection settings section whenever you wanted to change ip’s (ie, whenever you wanted to use a different ip address to download the torrents through).

Note: multiple ip’s are not necessary for most torrent downloaders. Generally one ip is more than enough, but if you have specific reasons for wanting more than one ip address to download torrents through, then this setup makes that very very easy to accomplish.

The setup of the torrent proxy does take a touch longer if you add extra ip’s onto it, but it’s only one command line each per extra ip address, and a bit of extra editing in the squid.conf configuration file. If you’re not already familiar with how to use the free PuTTY SSH client/program to securely connect to a remote server (and if you even care) this page explains how simple it is: How to Connect to a Remote VPS Server w/ the Free Secure Shell Program (SSH PuTTY)

If you’re not interested in the details, don’t worry about it; my 10 minute proxy tutorial covers it very quickly right in the beginning, and doesn’t go into all the detail that page there does (ie, connecting to a remote server via SSH PuTTY is as simple as typing in the ip address of the remote vps server you want to connect to and clicking the “open” button).

Then you just login to the “root” of the vps using the username “root”, and the root password the vps hosting company emails when you place the hosting order (roughly $6 – $10 month for the cheap bare bones unmanaged vps needed for this).

The only requirement for the server is that it’s an Unmanaged Linux VPS, and you have the option to choose one of the Ubuntu distros w/ full “root” access (any version number will do). Don’t get nervous if you don’t already understand what that means, because you really don’t even need to; all you need to know is that when you place the vps hosting order, you choose “Ubuntu” from the selection menu when asked which operating system (OS) you want loaded on your remote server.

The only other thing you need to know as far as adding multiple “extra” ip addresses onto your torrent proxy server, is that it generally takes vps hosting companies a little longer to add the extra ip’s onto the server than the initial set up with the one default ip address. It’s not a big deal; typically about a half a day. — You Are Here: Can I Put Multiple IP Addresses on My Torrent Proxy
